First Carter Home After Returning to Plains
In 1986, Unit 9A in the Plains Public Housing Project was dedicated as a place of historical significance. Located on Paschal Street, this is where Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter and their three sons, Jack, Chip, and Jeff, lived when they returned to Plains, Georgia, in October 1953. Jimmy received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy and the family moved back home from New York. They lived at Unit 9A for a year and then rented until they moved into their home on Woodland Drive in 1961. Amy was born in 1967.
"...We moved into a new government project that was home for about ten families. We qualified easily; we had no income."
--Rosalynn Carter
